About the Event
Discarded is an interactive art installation by Reno local Gregory Belle Jr. that will engage you in exploring the beauty that can be found in the least likely places. Through this experience, together we will be challenged to expand our sense of self through community by looking inside ourselves and reconnecting with the things we have cast away and encouraging others to do the same.
This four-day experience includes an artist reception where you can meet Gregory, learn about his process and inspiration, and purchase limited-edition prints. He also will be hosting a free Intro to Film Photography workshop and guiding you through the centerpiece of the exhibit, Repurposed. In this interactive part of the installation, you will be able to write down the things about yourself that you have decided to cast away. Gregory will take those bits of self and artistically display them for others to see and appreciate. It is time to say yes to ourselves... even the parts we don't think belong.

"I'm inviting you to join me anytime between 1pm and 7 pm, for as long as you like, in taking the things we throw away and creating something beautiful from them. I will be asking you to share your experiences through the written word, detailing the ways that others have tried to define you, and reclaim the parts of ourselves that we were told don't belong. I will then transform your words into something that honors who we are, who we were and how we choose to move through the world. This installation will be showcased on the final evening of the show on June 29th. If you are not able to attend in person, you can submit your artifacts to gregorybellejr@gmail.com."

Gregory Belle Jr. is a self-taught artist from Southern California. Their insatiable desire to extract beauty from the ordinary has led them down a path of experimenting with many different mediums: the way the morning light dances across the body of a muse, embracing the emancipation of facts from the anxiety-filled ocean of fiction using lowercases and capitals.… the frustrations of trying to control a water-soaked brush and allowing it to spill the desired images across the expanse of an unused sheet of heavy paper or the rhythm of shadows stimulated by a sporadic summer breeze. And while these, to any artist, are nothing new, he continues to find a way to breathe new life into the everyday experience.
